Course Description Focus is on what the public generally believes is the most common punishment: incarceration in a correctional institution; presents the early attempts at rehabilitating offenders in secure, custodial facilities; focuses on the different types of correctional facilities that have developed, with an eye towards how issues of safety can literally shape the facility; considers issues relating to the mangement and operation of such facilities; explains the Supereme Court's philosphy towards "prisoner's rights" in the context of issues, such as access to counsel; looks to how treatment strategies differ based upon the nature and needs of certain groups.
