Course Description
This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of fundamental concepts and their applications while reinforcing and developing skills essential for continued success as lifelong learners. Building on a knowledge base of the 42 basic handshapes that are used for fingerspelling, counting, and basic classifiers, this course uses stories to demonstrate signer’s use of vocabulary and classifier construction in context. Students explore topics like the mall, the beach, the city, downtown, restaurants, countries and states, as well as holidays like Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and Christmas. They also engage with ASL verbs, and signs for feelings, exercise, and school, as well as continuing to explore Deaf culture and the significant societal contributions made by Deaf people. By the end of this course, students should be able to hold a basic conversation and will demonstrate this through production of a video demonstrating role-shifting in a dialogue about travel.
