Course Description
This course offers students a comprehensive exploration of music through the study of fundamental elements such as pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre, harmony, and musical form. Students will examine music across a broad spectrum of historical periods and cultural contexts, developing an understanding of stylistic developments from Western classical traditions, including opera and 20th-century innovations like concrete music, to the evolution of music in film and media. The course also emphasizes global perspectives by exploring non-Western musical traditions and instruments from African, Indonesian, Indian, and other world cultures. Through analytical listening, historical study, and creative projects, students will deepen their appreciation of music’s cultural significance and artistic diversity. Students will also receive an introductory overview of art and art history. Students will develop critical skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in this course by analyzing art work of various mediums from different time periods. Students will examine elements of art, key design principles, and art history as they explore the world of art. Finally, students will explore the world of theater with a classic play.

This course is not intended for students who are taking or have completed either course "Art Studies" or "Music Studies".
