Course Description
English Communication is a review course designed to refresh grammar and writing skills and to help students communicate more effectively. It explains how to avoid grammatical, spelling, punctuation, and other errors when writing sentences and paragraphs; how to write precisely and effectively; and how to improve one's image by using the right word in the right place, whether writing or speaking.



Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Improve their communication skills by expanding their vocabulary and word usage

Converse more easily and effectively, and with greater self-confidence

Understand others better, at work and in social situations

Learn more readily, both formally and informally, and with greater comprehension

Improve their spelling by such methods as analyzing their common spelling errors,
applying spelling rules, and mentally picturing how a word is spelled

Define and effectively use homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms

Define and correctly use words formed from familiar root words

Recognize prefixes and use them to change the meanings of words

Recognize suffixes and use them according to the role a word plays in a sentence

Spot, correct, and avoid making errors in grammar

Use correct punctuation to help make their writing clear and effective

Learn and practice skills that professional writers and editors use every day

Focus their attention on the mechanics of correctly placing words on a page

Construct paragraphs with strong topic sentences, related explanatory details, and
smooth transitions.
