Course Description
In American Literature, students will learn and practice skills and strategies to read and write with purpose. Students will read and analyze various literary classics and explore the historical context around each work. They will write critically by responding to each novel by writing expository or persuasive essays. All essays are graded using the holistic scoring rubric. In addition, students will review sentence structure and punctuation in order to strengthen their writing. Students will learn to identify literary elements and explore how authors use language to construct meaning and messages in their works. Students will read and analyze political speeches for the importance of context, audience, and purpose. Students will conduct independent research gathering information from various sources and create a presentation. Readings include: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Red Badge of Courage, The Scarlet Letter, The Raven, and The Tempest.
