Course Description
World Geography is an ever-changing science that extends well beyond simply locating places on a map. It explores the distribution of people, animals, plants, cultures, resources, and industry around the globe. It covers everything from the earth-shaping forces on, above, and below the ground to the shifting of borders and the patterns of trade. This course also introduces students to individuals in various lands, for a glimpse of how they live and work, to illustrate how geographic factors affect people and the opportunities open to them.

The course includes the 698-page text Global Geography, with 74 up-to-date maps plus helpful charts, graphs, photos, and a glossary of geographic terms. A Student Assignment Book includes self-tests and two multiple-choice exams.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Interpret local, national, and world maps correctly and locate places accurately

Understand the terms and concepts used by geographers in discussing the world

List the 10 major geographic regions of the world and name their largest countries

Explain the similarities and differences of countries in the same geographic area

Discuss the various cultures and customs that have developed throughout the world

Relate geographic conditions to the way people look, dress, work, eat, and travel

List the major industries in areas ranging from Mongolia to the Persian Gulf

Name the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.)

Discuss the roles played in world affairs by the various regions of the world

Apply this information to everyday activities and news events as they are reported by newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations, and other media
