Course Description
Do you enjoy working on the computer? Are you fascinated by creating characters and having them relate to each other in stories and games? Do you want to learn to make your own characters move and interact online?

Students will do all this, and more, by learning some basic computational programming skills with Scratch. Scratch is a free visual programming language that helps students create interactive digital stories, animations, and games. It's a great deal of fun to use!

In this class, students will start by programming simple shapes to move and interact with each other. Then students will add audio (sounds and music). Soon, each student will have a portfolio of art, stories, and games of their own. The class will even have an “interactive dance party!" Students will spend time every week working on ideas in an online design journal and troubleshooting problems together through discussions and group activities.

This class requires a proctored final exam.

**Please Note: This course may not be appropriate for students with specific accessibility limitations as written. Please refer to the VHS Handbook policy on Special Education/Equity for more information on possible modifications.

Delivery Method

  • Internet
  • Real-Time Web-Based Teacher Access

  • Prerequisites
This course is an introductory-level class that does not require a background in computer programming. Students with an advanced level of game development or programming should understand this prior to enrolling in the course.

Students should have experience navigating the Internet. Students should have an interest in creative computing, animation, storytelling, gaming, and working in an educational online community.

This is a fun, project-based course, but it does follow the VHS weekly schedule of work deadlines. As with any online course, discipline and time management will be expected of all students enrolled, and grades may be reduced for late submissions.
