Course Description Program Outline Here's how it works Your certificate program consists of courses designed to take you step-by-step toward understanding all the essential elements of Bed and Breakfast Management. Your first course will be sent to you as soon as your enrollment has been accepted. Note: You will need access to the Internet to complete this program. HSP100 - Bed and Breakfast - Planning Your Operation This course starts with making the first decisions about your B&B: how to build your business plan, conduct market research, determine your start up costs and other financial forecasting. You'll also learn details about market research; where to start your research; the benefits of market testing; using demographics; finding you target market; adjusting to market changes; creating a questionnaire; types of surveys; interpreting data; customer buying behavior and values; online resources. The course continues with a lesson on business connections including: networking; building and maintaining you network; successful networking; developing community contacts; finding a mentor; online connections. Students will also learn about important legal concepts like the types of legal requirements; legal resources; regulations, licenses and permits; federal, state and local requirements; payroll; zoning laws; business taxes. Lesson 1 - Bed and Breakfast: Plan to Succeed Lesson 2 - Market Research Lesson 3 - Business Connections Lesson 4 - Legal Requirements and Resources BUS055 - Marketing Basics This course will teach the student more specific information that will help improve their marketing success. Students learn to develop a marketing plan; tips for effective marketing; advertising campaigns; public relations campaigns; marketing resources; promotions and publicity; finding the right strategy for your business. The course concludes with information specific to advertising your business online and internet marketing: what is e-commerce; establishing your Web presence; security, credibility, and consumers; creating your Web page; online resources; Web service providers; making yourself known. Lesson 1 - Marketing that Works Lesson 2 - Putting Your Business Online HSP105 - Bed and Breakfast - Running Your Operation This final course discusses B&B property development, furnishings and amenities, housekeeping, and financial operations, The student will also learn valuable budget development skills like estimating costs and expenses; software and online resources; forecasting sales volume; pricing strategies; making financial projections; financial analysis; performance measures. The course also covers the importance of keeping records; bookkeeping basics; computerized accounting; record keeping for tax purposes; line item descriptions; income statements; your business status; financial statements and statement analysis. The program concludes with studies on your obligations as a B&B host - food service, customer service, maintaining your personal life, advertising and promotion, guest diversity, and forecasting.
