Course Description This course is designed in accordance with the Advanced Placement Latin Vergil syllabus. Students will begin with two passages from Cicero to view one writer's thoughts of the importance of poetry. The remaining program concentrates on a close reading of selections from Vergil's Aeneid. Students study rhetorical style and poetic meter. They write numerous critical literary and historical analyses of the epic. They explore cultural topics which shed light on the Aeneid, such as Roman history in the first century BC, history of the epic style, and the author's biography and other works. Preparation for the AP examination is stressed heavily throughout the class. Students interact with the teacher via e-mail and telephone. Agenda, assignments, graded and non-graded activities, quizzes and tests are all posted on the Internet.
