Course Description
Life is an ever-changing collection of stories, and Journalism in the Digital Age helps you find and tell the stories that make up today's world using technology that captivates audiences. Compelling topics, strong writing, engaging visual design, and multimedia all come to life as you write about anything from local bands, interesting people, to life in your community for an online magazine-format weblog. You will have steady opportunities to identify and produce your own stories, conduct interviews, and enhance your work through multimedia, including photography and short video. No prior experience in media production is necessary. You will also work collaboratively to provide feedback to colleagues as well as analyze the productions of a number of today's top news, sports, and feature journalists. In addition to sharing your perspective on the world through the course e-magazine, your work will form the basis of a digital portfolio of writing and multimedia.




Learning Objectives:

Students will:


- Employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

- Apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experiences, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g. sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, content, graphics).

- Apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g. spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print texts.

- Conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources (e.g. print and non-print texts, artifacts, people) to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience.

- Use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g. libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.

- Use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g. for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).







Academic Content:


Journalism in the Digital Age blends writing, readings in nonfiction and opinion, and an engaging use of technology as students use an understanding of how news is reported to produce news packages from their own part of the globe. Instruction focuses on writing techniques and media creation and distribution as students create and respond to stories through words, video, images, and audio.






Kinds of Assignments:


Course assignments include weekly contributions to discussions, weekly writing/multimedia packages, occasional team media production assignments, individual writing and weblog contributions. Students select their own topics in nearly all writing/multimedia assignments.





Projects Required:

Projects Required: Weekly writing/multimedia packages, at least one collaborative writing project, an in-depth feature news package blending a range of multimedia about a self-selected topic.

  • Prerequisites
    Software needed includes Adobe Reader, Flash Player 8 or higher, Windows Media Player, QuickTime or other media player. Windows Movie Maker or Apple iMovie would be helpful; online alternatives are available. Links to online readings and other resources will be provided. Students would also benefit by access to a still or video digital camera, plug-in microphone for a computer, or MP3 recorder.

    Course Materials
    Virtual High School will have course materials, if any, shipped directly to students. While there is no additional cost for course materials, there is an additional charge for shipping. Students are required to return such course materials to course instructor upon completion of the course.
