Course Description
Trigonometry is a fascinating tool, initially conceived from chords in a Unit-Circle it has wide applications and it can be said that whenever space is involved trigonometry is used irrespective of the area of interest. Etymology of the word Trigonometry comes from Greek meaning Three Angle Measure (Treis = three, Gonia = angle and Metron = measure). It is known mostly as the stuff which had weird stuff like Sine, Cosine, Tangent and Cotangent. There are basically ratios of sided of a right triangle for High school and can be summation of Series in advanced college Math.

Topics Covered:

Trigonometry

In Greek 'Trigonon' means a triangle. 'Metron' means a measure. The combination of these two words gives us the word 'Trigonometry'. Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with the relations between the sides and angles of triangles. In our study we will deal with the right angled triangles only.

Trigonometrical Identities

The trigonometric ratio's are: Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Cotangent, Secant, and Cosecant.

Trigonometric Tables

Trigonometric tables are used (1). to find the value of a t-ratio when the angle is given. (2). to find the angle when the value of the t-ratio is given.

As an angle increases, the sine ratio increases, the cosine ratio decreases and the tangent ratio increases.

Trigonometry XI

An angle is an amount of rotation of a half-line (or ray) in a plane about its end point from an initial position to a terminal position. The important terms are: Measurement of angle, Positive and Negative angles, Lines at right angles, Quadrants, Angle in standard position.

Trigonometry (Continued)

An equation containing the trigonometrical functions of an unknown quantity is termed as a trigonometrical equation, which holds for some values (and not for all values) of the quantities involved.

Solution of Right Angled Triangles

When calculating sides or angles of right angled triangles, it is easiest to use the appropriate trigonometric relation. Finding the value of trigonometric ratios from the tables is learnt easily.
Nowadays of course calculators are able to give accurate values for any degree of tan, sin or cos. It is important to keep in mind the simple algebraic rules for cross multiplication, addition, subtraction while carrying out calculations.

Heights and Distances

The height of a building or the width of a river can be measured without climbing or crossing it. In this chapter we will show how it is made possible. Some suitable angles and distances will be measured to achieve the above results.

Angle of elevation is the angle between a horizontal line and the line joining the observer's eye to some object above the horizontal line.

Angle of depression is the angle between a horizontal line and the line joining the observer's eye to some object beneath the horizontal line.
