Course Description
Does the term “global citizen” intrigue you? Have you always desired to emerge yourself in the cultures and lifestyles of others around the globe? In Literature of the World: Human Rights and Global Perspectives, students will utilize a variety of resources from fiction, news articles, first-hand accounts, multi-media and non-fiction pieces to explore the vast cultural and societal differences of the world in which we live.



Students will discern what brings people together, and what drives nations apart. They will also study their role in human rights issues by discussing both past and present international conflicts.The course will explore appreciation for the diversity of our world, its people, customs and cultures, thus enabling students to reach a full understanding of what it means to be a global citizen today.



Students will:
·work collaboratively to participate in stimulating class discussions on weekly topics

·write essays, discussion posts and other pieces utilizing proper standard English

·explore a variety of cultures through personal experiences, reading selections, and multi-media resources

·view cultural and societal issues through different perspectives

·empathize with people/characters from other cultural backgrounds, their historical struggles, goals, and lifestyles

·identify and examine their own prejudices and become self-aware members of the global community

  • Prerequisites
    Students *must* have strong skills in writing, reading, and literary analysis in order to succeed in this honors-level course. Basic word processing and internet search skills are required.

    Virtual High School will have course materials, if any, shipped directly to students. While there is no additional cost for course materials, there is an additional charge for shipping. Students are required to return such course materials to course instructor upon completion of the course.
