This is the essential question we will ponder through the journey of this course.

o What exactly will you need to know how to do in your life after high school?
o Would you benefit from participation in a weekly writers' workshop?
o Would you enjoy refining your skills by reading and discussing short stories and poems written by a culturally/regionally diverse selection of literary geniuses?

This is a core English class. Its purpose is to teach literacy skills necessary for survival in the 21st Century. We will do so by use of basic grammar exercises, composition of three essays, and fascinating literary discussions.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of taking this course students will be able to:
1. Build a basic and lasting foundation for the study of language arts
2. Expand vocabulary
3. Read various forms of literature and examine them within the context of art and human experience
4. Develop analytical skills by acquiring basic literary terminology and practicing literary analysis
5. Review and develop grammar skills necessary for proper written communication
6. Improve written communication and expression by exploring and taking part in the writing process
7. Learn how to communicate with teacher and peers in the virtual classroom
Academic Content:
The purpose of this class is to learn literacy skills needed for the 21st Century.
Students at all levels will have the opportunity to increase their skills by:
*reading various works of literature: short stories, poetry, and a self-selected novel
*engaging in literary discussions
*participating in weekly grammar and vocabulary lessons,
*attending the weekly writer's workshop to compose in descriptive, expository, and persuasive modes
Grading will be based on a point system, (total points earned divided by the total points possible). Specific details for the grading of each assignment will follow the instructions/directions. Updated averages will be posted weekly.

*writing assignments--both formal and informal
