Course Description
This course is designed to enable students to master the knowledge and skills enumerated in the NCTM Algebra 2 Learning Standards. These include linear equations, polynomials, rational expressions, irrational and complex numbers, quadratics, analytic geometry, triangle and circle trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, sequences and series, statistics and probability, and matrix operations. Students will be required to read and work problems from the text, participate in small group discussions, view video lectures, complete computer-aided instruction, complete virtual labs, and complete an extensive array of tests and quizzes.



NOTE: Students can take this course as Honors or Standard level. Honors level students complete additional assignments such as labs and more challenging
problems, adding approximately 2 hours of study to the average 6 hour standard level weekly course load.



***Learning Objectives:
Students will master the knowledge and skills enumerated in the NCTM Algebra 2 Learning Standards, and to be fully prepared for subsequent pre-calculus coursework.


***Academic Content:
The academic content includes linear equations, polynomials, rational expressions, irrational and complex numbers, quadratics, analytic geometry, triangle and circle trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, sequences and series, statistics and probability, and matrix operations.


***Kinds of Assignments:
Students will be assigned text reading, video lectures, text problems, Plato computer-based tutorials, online labs, and research projects.


***Projects Required:
Students will complete research projects using Internet resources, a few of which will require formal writeups. Students will use online labs to explore the mathematics of physics in areas of music, motion, electricity, energy, and fluids.

  • Prerequisites
    Student must have completed Algebra 1 and either completed Geometry or be taking it concurrently. Student must have access to a high-speed (DSL or cable) Internet connection at least 4 days weekly, including a PC with sound and Java applet support, and a scanner.

    Course Materials
    Materials Required: A scientific calculator.

    Virtual High School will have course materials, if any, shipped directly to students. While there is no additional cost for course materials, there is an additional charge for return shipping. Students are required to return such course materials to course instructor upon completion of the course.
