Course Description
This course will examine the relationships between events in the twentieth century, the evolution of popular music, and the cultural messages that music displayed. The course begins with a look at how popular culture (be it art, theatre, literature, or music) has been "historical" in the past. Students will proceed through each decade of the twentieth century, examining the cultural impact of blues, jazz, rock, reggae, pop, metal, folk, country and rap. Students will examine lyrics and historical events, and analyze how lyrical content has changed over time.
