Course Description
The Holocaust can be effectively integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. This course will be approached in the following manner: Students will of course, learn the history of the times. They will examine events and ideas that contributed to the Holocaust, such as the history of Anti-Semitism in Europe and the rise of Hitler in Germany. Students will study propaganda and the role it plays in creating government regimes, such as the Nazi Regime. Holocaust literature encompasses many literary genres which will be included. Two books will be read: Night by Elie Wiesel and All But My Life by Gerda Weismann Klein. All of these works portray basic truths about human nature and provide credible models of heroism and dignity. Students will also have an opportunity to read examples of Holocaust poetry as an avenue for understanding the events of history. Finally, students will have the opportunity to conduct an interview with a Holocaust survivor. The disciplines involved in the course are literature, history, culture, and art. Students will engage with many fundamental questions about human nature and why such a thing could occur.
