Course Description
American Multiculturalism will help you learn more about cultural diversity in the United States. You'll learn about bias, stereotypes, and hate, and how to deal with difficult or uncomfortable situations in your own life. You might even be asked to bare the deepest secrets of your soul! We'll study various cultures such as Native American, Asian, Hispanic, African American, Arab American, and more! If you want to learn more about the diversity of America, challenge your conventional thinking about the way we categorize, label, and treat the people around us, learn about the groups that have influenced the culture of America, and recognize your own attitudes and beliefs regarding American multiculturalism, then this course is for you!

Learning Objectives:

To increase your vocabulary and enhance your understanding of specific terms to be used when discussing multiculturalism in any context.
·To instill an appreciation for the diversity of America.
·To encourage you to challenge conventional thinking about the way we categorize, label, and treat the people around us.
·To expose you to some of the culture groups that have influenced the culture of America.
·To encourage you to recognize your own attitudes and beliefs regarding American multiculturalism.

Academic Content:

Students will be assessed on the following:
Weekly entries in their online journals.
Written reflections and responses to issue specific readings.
Participation in CourseRoom discussions.
Projects (individual and small group.)
Periodic virtual field trips which will require a report back to the class.
Final projects

Kinds of Assignments:

CourseRoom discussions and debates on questions regarding multicultural education. Taking Sides readings; Clashing Views and Current Issues on Race and Ethnicity. Group projects and presentations on the culture traits of America and their origins. Virtual field trips to see example of art, read poetry of prose and visit museums. Weekly reflection journal. Extra credit activities. Final project that presents your understanding of the issues facing multicultural America.

Projects Required:

Individual projects will include surveying the cultural influences around them and then creating a culture map to indicate the origins of the influences. Group projects will include developing strategies and plans to address multicultural issues in their own communities. Students will also compose a letter to a recognized authority to express their opinion on an issue of diversity.
